Since desegregation, A Better Chance has served talented students of color by opening the doors through which they can best develop their innate potential. Across the United States, with A Better Chance on their side, our Scholars attend the nation's premier college preparatory schools, where they grow, thrive, and become the leaders we all want to see in the world - as have generations of Alumni before them.
A Better Chance helps academically-talented students of color access the best educational opportunities for middle school and high school.
Our College Preparatory Schools Program (CPSP) nationally recruits, places, and supports students enrolled in grades 4 through 9 at more than 300 independent day, boarding, and select public schools.

From their first orientation meeting, Prep students are taught our motto: Excellence, Integrity, Commitment, and Courage. Underpinning the four words of the motto is the theme of Community. The motto becomes a touchstone—values that shape their actions and the Prep for Prep Community as a whole. Prep students and alumni strive to embody these words in everything they do.
Founded by South Bronx school teacher Gary Simons with the support of Columbia University’s Teachers College, Prep for Prep opened its doors in 1978 with 25 students and three teachers. Eleven independent schools committed places in their seventh-grade classes.
Today, over 80 schools enroll more than 700 Prep students each year. Our Prep Community includes over 5,000 students and alumni.
