Dear Our Lady of Lourdes School Families and Friends,
“Through faith you are all children of God in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:26
A person’s quest for happiness often takes the person on a journey for many things – a higher level job, a better home, financial security, the latest in electronics, clothing, etc. Yet even when these are acquired, the person does not feel fulfilled and the quest for more continues.
You have all probably made the same observation as I have: There are those who have seemingly all that they could possibly want in life and more and who are not at all happy, and there are those who have very little, materially speaking, who are contented and happy. Why this contradiction? It is a cliché but true: Real happiness comes from within us, not from the outside things we acquire. Faith seems to be the key. We are reminded of this as we approach the blessed feast of Christmas. All of those involved in the first Christmas had faith.
Mary said “yes” to God in becoming the Mother of Jesus. No doubt frightened and confused by the Angel Gabriel’s message, she made a true leap of faith. Joseph, engaged to Mary, discovered that she was pregnant, a crime in their society. His world must have turned upside down with a terrible feeling of betrayal. Yet when the reality of the situation was explained to him by an angel, he married Mary and became her staunch protector and foster father of the Christ Child. What a tower of faith he was!
As they were watching their flock on that Holy Night, the shepherds believed the angel who told them not to be afraid, that Christ the Savior was born. Without questioning, they went immediately to the stable to adore Him, an example of faith in action as are the Magi who “pinned” their faith on a star and traveled a long distance, bearing gifts for the Messiah. Their faith had to be strong: They were very learned men, suddenly kneeling in a stable, adoring, like the shepherds, a helpless Baby.
Here we are in 2021 living in uncertain times, each with our own set of circum-stances, worried about what the future may hold for us and our loved ones. Will we look within to find and cling to that faith which is the anchor of our lives?
Isn’t that what the core of Christmas is? God really did send His Son to earth to live and love among us and to redeem us. Jesus Christ has changed our lives. This faith is the source of our joy and contentment in the midst of what life brings. We reflect this year, as we have in the past, on the profound mystery of Christmas, putting all of our faith in the Christ Child, who is the epitome of God’s faith in us.
I wish you and your families the joy that only Christ can bring and the faith that will always sustain you. Merry Christmas!
Sincerely,
Suzanne Kaszynski, Principal
